Technology Is The Quay - 2003 Winner Announced

Birkenhead-based Quay Technologies Ltd has scooped the 2003 Merseyside Innovation Awards

The company won the title because of its unique, potentially lifesaving technology which uses ultraviolet light powered by microwaves to disinfect both drinking and waste water.

Every year around five million people die from water borne diseases and, until now, the only way of disinfecting water has been through chemicals. The Quay UV process is chemical free and eliminates the formation of by-products or potentially harmful corrosive substances and can also be applied in the food industry.

The company won the title on the basis of its unique, potentially lifesaving technology which uses ultraviolet light powered by microwaves to disinfect both drinking and wastewater.

A cheque for £10,000 was presented to Sales Director Duncan Collins today at the Innovations Awards Grand Final in the Crowne Plaza Hotel hosted by BBC Radio Merseyside's Linda McDermott.

He said: "We are absolutely delighted to have won this prestigious award. A huge amount of hard work and years of research put in by the team have brought us to this stage. We know our technology has the potential to benefit millions of people world -wide and winning this award will undoubtedly raise the profile of Quay Technologies.

"The prize money will be put towards developing a project for use in the third world which involves adapting our existing disinfection system so that it can become solar powered."
