Two Wirral based scientists have developed the world's first 3D scanner capable of retailing from just £100. Dr John Wilson is Managing Director of Spiral Scratch Limited. Alongside co-inventor Dr Matthew Reed he has been developing the technology for the last three years. Spiral Scratch has just been named as this month's winner of the Merseyside Innovation Awards and will now go forward to compete for a share in a £10,000 cash prize. The company is currently seeking funding of around £500,000 to enable the technology to become a commercial reality. Dr Wilson said: "We are thrilled to have been named as this month's winner of the Merseyside Innovation Awards- it will boost our profile which should help us raise the investment we need."
Currently two dimensional flat bed scanners are connected to most office PCs for reproducing standard documents. The attraction of Spiral Scratch's technology is that, within seconds of inserting an object into its scanner, a three dimensional image is reproduced complete with texture and colours. It can be rotated, manipulated or incorporated into engineering drawings, design or games. Dr Wilson said the idea was inspired partly by children's toys and sees great potential in a wide variety of industries, games in particular. "Most youngsters have with a mixture of traditional and high tech toys these days. The 3D scanner means that they could, for example, play a computer game featuring their favourite action man or model car." Spiral Scratch is currently developing adjacent technology alongside the University of Liverpool and is also working with ICDC and Digital Inc. The Directors expect to move to premises in the new Science Park in Wavertree shortly.
